Adhesive wool felt: a technical and versatile solution for multiple industries

Natural wool felt can be used in almost everything the mind is capable of imagining.

Since time immemorial, wool felt has accompanied human beings as a silent ally of comfort and protection against adverse conditions. Evidence dates back thousands of years BC, in Central Asia, the Middle East and Mongolia, where nomadic peoples discovered in this material extraordinary insulating and durable capabilities. They used it as covering for floors, as the walls of their homes (yurts), in clothing, decorations, shields… Over the centuries, felting techniques spread through Europe and later to America, turning wool felt into a prized raw material also for footwear, hats, armour and other accessories. It even defined a style between the 15th and 20th centuries, becoming synonymous with both well-being and elegance and distinction.

Adhesive wool felt

Today, wool felt, especially in its self-adhesive version, still offers its unique properties and adapts with extreme versatility to the demanding challenges of today’s world. Automotive, construction, interior design, healthcare, music, sport, etc. are just some of the sectors in which adhesive wool felt is providing technical, sensory, resistant, aesthetic and comfortable solutions… It is a strategic resource that, thanks to its exclusive qualities, helps solve challenges in multiple industries.

What exactly is adhesive wool felt?

Adhesive wool felt is designed to offer greater efficiency and simplify installation in technical, decorative and industrial settings. We manufacture it respecting the principles of the authentic traditional process while at the same time incorporating advanced technologies that make it possible to control its unique attributes and guarantee maximum quality.

  • Each piece of felt is made of carefully selected 100% natural wool fibres, which are homogenised, aligned, consolidated and conglomerated through extremely precise mechanical processes (mixing, carding, felting, fulling…), combining pressure, moisture and heat, plus repetitive compaction cycles that guarantee a resistant structure. This is achieved thanks to the unique physical property of sheep’s wool: the microscopic scales on its surface (cuticles), which are capable of interlocking in the presence of moisture, heat and friction.
  • On its reverse, a high-performance adhesive layer is added, normally formulated to withstand demanding conditions, such as exposure to high temperatures or high humidity.

Textil Olius wool felt

This results in a strong, cohesive, durable, uniform felt that is extraordinarily resistant, soft to the touch and “ready to use”. It is a material that combines the functional richness and intrinsic versatility of natural wool with the practicality of a self-adhesive backing that allows simple and durable fixing on various surfaces: glass, wood, metal, polymers, etc.

And it is this fusion that turns adhesive wool felt into a valuable, adaptable resource that is highly appreciated in multiple scenarios. For example, to seal, insulate and cushion in industrial processes; to cover acoustic panels and other elements in interior design or construction projects; to absorb vibrations or protect machinery surfaces…

Specifically, adhesive wool felt:

  • Allows quick application.
  • Eliminates or minimises the use of mechanical fasteners.
  • Offers reliable and durable adhesion, even under pressure or heat.
  • Supports different levels of adhesion, depending on its purpose.

Key technical properties of adhesive wool felt: advantages for industry

Felt is a non-woven textile matrix manufactured in various densities and, as it is made up of millions of individual natural wool fibres (mixed, felted, compressed …), it offers almost permanent resilience.
Its most outstanding and valued properties are the following:

  • Cushioning. Its ability to absorb impacts and its elasticity allow it to withstand static and dynamic compression stresses without deteriorating. Felt has a molecular structure that allows it to stretch without deforming and to recover its original shape.
  • Vibration insulation. Wool felt can reach an efficiency of up to 85% in isolating vibration energy. For example, if the appropriate densities and thicknesses are selected, felt can reduce the vibration energy that a machine transmits to its base.
  • Moisture and liquid absorption (hygroscopic). Wool felt is durable and stable in the presence of oils, greases, lubricants, moisture, detergents, salts and various chemical products. It can easily absorb moisture up to ⅓ of its weight without losing its insulating capacity. It can also absorb water and then release it slowly. For example, it serves as a soaker or retainer of liquids or oils in industrial equipment.
  • Compatible with industrial processes. Felt can be cut, die-cut and sewn with relative ease, without losing integrity or texture.
  • Acoustic absorption. Its complex, unique, three-dimensional internal structure, almost magical, with curly and interlaced fibres that create interconnected paths, allows wool felt to trap and dissipate sound waves to an exceptional degree. It is especially useful for controlling sound reverberation at mid and high frequencies, where human speech and shrill noises, respectively, are perceived.
  • Temperature regulation. Wool fibres have a curly structure that creates tiny chambers that trap air. This provides a sensation of comfort in both cold and warm climates.
  • Sustainability. It is a natural, renewable and biodegradable fibre that respects the environment and the aesthetic of each project.
  • Durability. Technical wool felts do not fray, and they maintain their integrity and functionality even in applications under friction or repeated impacts. They preserve their elegance over time.
  • Functional versatility. It is used for sanding, polishing, cleaning, sealing, covering… in joints, seals, filter media, decorative supports, etc.
  • Aesthetics. Wool felt has a natural and elegant presence. Its flexible body adapts smoothly to shapes and surfaces. Its volume and texture provide authenticity, visual depth and multiple finishes with unique tactile sensations. At the same time, its fibres are capable of reflecting light subtly, creating warm chromatic nuances that enhance the aesthetics of any environment.

And if the project requires a custom solution? At Textil Olius we specialise in the technical customisation of natural wool felts for any application. We adapt specific densities and thicknesses, create the colour shade you need and apply advanced functional finishes: water-repellent, fire-retardant, anti-static…
